Playing, Singing, and Having Fun!

Our July gathering was hosted in the Bridgewater Retirement Village, by the Joyful Noise Group.

They put a new twist on playing songs while tuned in DAA, and inviting all others to play the chords and sing, while tuned in DAD. Yes, DAA and DAD tunings CAN play together, and did so with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep, ABC Song, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Michael Row the Boat Ashore, and Tom Dooley.

“When You Comin’ to See Me”, accompanied by a pair of “Ugly Sticks” from Newfoundland, was the final song by Joyful Noise.

Individual selections included “This Land is Your Land” led by Donna Jo McCloskey on the dulcimer, Andy Moyer on the ukulele and Cheryl Allen on the guitar.

A Larry and Elaine Conger arrangement of Just A Closer Walk with Thee ended with lyrics to “Just a Bowl of Butterbeans, Pass the cornbread if you please! I don’t want no collard greens. .. All I want is a bowl of butter beans”, played by members of the Port Republic group.

After a break and cookie snack, we shared some old favorite jam tunes, including Boil Dem Cabbage Down, Go Tell Aunt Rhody, I’ll Fly Away, ending with our Tull Glazener arrangement of Go In Peace.

We were delighted to have several “first-time” jam participants with us! New folks are always welcome! Playing and singing with 30-some dulcimers provided a fun afternoon! Thanks to all!
