Jammin’ in June

What a fun time we had, singing along as the host group, River City Strummers, played some favorite songs! Their selection of sing-a-longs were a delight, and they led us in playing two new rounds (Old Chairs to Mend and Oh, How Lovely is the Evening) and an historic fiddle tune Fancy Gap Breakdown.

There was good audience participation with the old Carter family song Give Me the Roses While I Live, one of the songs that were collected from the Appalachian hill country by A.P. Carter. James Rowe wrote the words and R.H. Cornelius came up with the tune of this song popularized by the Carters.

Another audience favorite today was “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” Originally recorded by Elvis Presley, this romantic ballad has its roots in the classical melody “Plaisir d’amour”.

After a break for visiting, catching up and enjoying tasty snacks, we re-convened for playing some tunes together, enjoying some that the club has played over the years, (Liza Jane w/ harmony, Black Mountain Rag, Ash Grove, and Southwind) and including some newer additions such as Forked Deer, John Stinson #2, and The Fiddler’s Last Waltz and ending with our standard departing song, Go In Peace.

Thanks, River City Strummers, for a GREAT GATHERING!
